In the 18th century, a fortress was developed at Montjuïc overlooking the harbour. On sixteen March 1794, While France and Spain had been at war, the French astronomer Pierre François André Méchain was supplied leave to enter the fortress to generate observations which were to be used to evaluate the space from Dunkirk to Barcelona, two cities
